Let’s face it. We have and still are living in an ever-changing world. Each
generation has brought more challenges with it than the last. Each
generation has also brought more opportunities that had not existed in the
last. 20 years ago, no one ever thought that computers would become so
important that there’s one in virtually every home. Vinyl records and
cassette tapes have been replaced by CDs and MP3-players and it seems
as though we can’t live without the Internet.
Years ago, only big corporations with tons of capital could produce
records. Today, nearly anyone can record, produce and sell his/her own
music, worldwide, from his/her own desktop studio with a small budget.
Hard disc recording with digital audio has replaced the 2-inch magnetic
tapes in recording studios. Many large studios have gone out of business
and home studios are popping out of the woodwork. The home
recording industry has gone from simple multitrack analog cassette
recorder to portable machines with a built n hard disc, CD-Burner and
on-board effects and software configurations to get 64+ tracks of midi and
audio on a laptop.
The way the world does business has changed dramatically. Once, getting
a record deal was the sign of “making it”. Today, we’ve learned better and
now the deal ‘helps’, but it is not instant fame and fortune anymore. The
market for CDs is over-saturated. With the job market in general getting
tough, the tough get going. We have to re-think the very ways we’ve
operated in the past and adjust to new technologies and create new
opportunities for ourselves.
